My mother...

tried to threaten me with posting embarrassing pictures from my youth.

Two problems with that.

1. She has no place to post them.
2. I have no shame.

As soon as I get a moment...

to catch my breath, I'll try to post some actual words here. But in the mean time, cute baby pic!

Shouldn't we...

be doing something about this?

Don't injured service people deserve better? First they go to war for our country, they become gravely injured and then the government has the audacity to make them jump through these hoops? What a nightmare, especially for a person or family that is already having to deal with a new kind of life, trying to fit back into a place where they may never fit right again.

I've been mulling over in my head a plan to build a web site to help rally and organize people with experience and knowledge of government bureaucracy and red-tape to help soldiers get through all of the paperwork and BS they have to to get what they deserve. Sort of like a big brothers/big sisters program. What do you guys think? Any ideas or suggestions? Is anyone already doing this? Anyone interested in helping out?

A little help?

I'm thinking about revamping my web site (http://www.kellyfowler.com) to make it seem a bit more professional and to expand it out into less the realm of ME. I've been toying around with a name and have come up with Aurca (Designs, Design, Web, Solutions, Works, whatever- not sure yet).

So what I need from you is some font opinion. See, I LOVE fonts, and therefore I want someone who maybe isn't so goggle-eyed to take a look at some fonts and tell me what they think, what they like best, whatever. And that's where you come in. I'm looking for something that looks professional, specifically legible, but has a little style. Something that looks good not only to be read, but also as a graphic itself. I know, I don't explain myself well. Just tell me which you like best.

Thanks for the help!

So much I want to talk about...

for example, my daughter lost her first tooth, and then promptly ate it. Did she realize? No. So we told her the Tooth Fairy is VERY TINY, and used her magic powers to zip into her mouth, grab the tooth and go. Kevin surreptitiously snuck up and left whatever change was in his pocket under her pillow. I had been planning to give her gold dollar coins (the seemed more magical to me), oh well. She was thrilled regardless. At least she didn't freak out about the tiny creature that sneaks into her mouth and snatches her teeth.

And NPR this morning, discussing the idea that black people no longer consider themselves one race, but rather several. After a while you get to understand that in fact its a class issue, not a racial issue, but it was interesting nonetheless. I had a deep conversation with my imaginary passenger about it.

But, since I am brainless and shallow pre-caffeine, here is a meme (and yes people, you're getting tagged. You know who you are, and you're on my list for various reasons. Deal with it.)

Memed again.

Tagged by Michael.

I have to somehow think of 8 random things about me. 8 is a lot. This is going to take time. Here goes.

  1. I value my time away from my kids as much as I value my time with them.

  2. I LOVE what I do for a living. I consider myself EXTREMELY lucky that I do.

  3. I have prehensile feet. That does not make me sub-human. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it)

  4. I love baking.

  5. I want to be a better knitter.

  6. I am very disappointed in myself that I am not fluent in at least two other languages. That was one of my goals in life, and it seems more unreachable every day.

  7. I am mildly OCD.

  8. I dream complete B movies. They have a beginning, middle and end, they are in color, and they tend to be incredibly cheesy. The last one involved aliens. One was even in claymation. It had dinosaurs.

I tag Kevin, Mario and Alala.

So when you go out to the hair salon to get your kid's hair trimmed, you never expect to leave with a whole new kid.

This time, Rora said she wanted to have short hair like her Aunt Jamee- to her chin. And that's what she got. She looks like a completely new kid. I hadn't realized she had had long hair for so long.

I have to admit its pretty cute in a "buster Brown" sort of way.

And she loves it- a chick who knows her own mind.

Tagged..

By Alala, on these things I vaguely remember called books. I believe they contained paper, and words and punctuation. Pictures too, sometimes. Yeah, I remember! Books! Lord, I have not been reading enough lately. Sigh.

Total number of books:

Are you kidding? You should be asking total number of bookCASES. And even then, I wouldn't be sure...

Last book I read:

I am Legend by Richard Matheson (isn't the cover great?). It is also being made into a film, though I'm not to sure how much the film will have in common with the book outside of the title. Loaned to me by my estimable brother in-law. Very cool and very suitable to the season (yes, I did actually read this in October, but it was while my child screamed in the background at 2 AM, and it was a novella, so it doesn't count as a Book book). Before that, it was the last Harry Potter novel.

Last book I bought:

The last Harry Potter novel.

5 Meaningful Books:
As it turns out, I don't tend to read in my spare time to learn- I read to enjoy myself, so none of these books has any scholarly weight to them, none of them are meant to inform in any way- they are just fun. Its all I require.

The first I think of is Fool on the Hill, by Matt Ruff. Very good story, a fun read, and somehow I named both of my daughters after characters in the book.

Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore. Never has religion been this funny.

Skinny Legs and All. I love Tom Robbins. That is all. Oh, that and I learned at least something about Jewish/Arabic relations from it. It also has one of my favorite openings, "This is the room of the wolfmother wallpaper. The toadstool motel you once thought a mere folk tale, a corny, obsolete, rural invention..."

The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde. Fun reading, especially if you love books. A bit punny, and you really have to suspend disbelief, but totally worth it.

and finally, both Assassination Vacation and The Partly Cloudy Patriot by Sarah Vowell. You'll learn more about American history reading these two books than you ever will in grade school. And if you can get past her voice, the audio books are a hoot.
