Tis the season...
to be baking (even though it hit 90 today, damn it).
So I made two pies. One for my Dad, and one to share with others? Who wants some?
Eye candy, etc...
I saw these while surfing today...Another man's Trash

Its been a busy weekend...
On Saturday, we went to the Capitol City Carnival, which allowed us to see George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelic for the second time, drink lots of lovely beer and see various burlesque and freak show acts (we had back stage passes, so we got REALLY good views of the concert itself) and of course I took lots of photos:

And then on Sunday we went to the Maryland Renaissance Festival:

Needless to say, it was an exhausting but fun weekend!

Cool!

The Roddler by Kid Kustoms, is one of those crazy concepts that could really only be imagined in LA. Created by Jamie Coblentz, Jason Albert and Joe Iacono, The Roddler is equal part custom hot rod and baby stroller.

Someone I can relate too...
So, I was recently trying to explain to someone that I wasn't really INTO being the mother of an infant. Its not a role I enjoy in any way shape or form, it doesn't suit me, I don't find infants endearing, I'm not into cute, etc. I like my kids fine, I just don't find this phase particularly enjoyable. I much prefer a child who has grown a personality. That takes roughly 4-6 months? Maybe more? The reaction I got was something akin to "well, hopefully Clio will never find out you don't like her as much as Rora"- now, I may be being overly sensitive, and I was definitely under-caffeinated, but that was the gist I got.
Now, as Rora has gotten older, I like her better and better as her personality and "self" develops- I believe as Clio grows up, the same will be true. Right now, she's a lump of cry, sleep, cry, eat, cry, poop, cry, pee. Fun? Hell no.
Anyway, I just read this item at www.dooce.com, and I TOTALLY relate. That's it exactly. And its okay. It doesn't mean I don't like her, don't love her, love her less- anything like that. It just means that there are different kinds of Moms in this world, and not being the one who's head-over-heels over the pooping-eating-crying machine is okay.

ARRGHH!
and no, that's not in deference to "International Talk Like a Pirate Day", instead, its because of this exchange, which happened last night:We were watching Justice League Unlimited with Rora and this abstinence commercial comes on with the tag line (paraphrasing): "talk to your kids about when they should have sex, blah blah blah".
So Rora turns to me and says,
"When can I have sex?"
I swear Kev's hair turned 2 shades whiter right on the spot.
Happy Birthday Amie!

The Great Frederick Fair...

was a mishmash of rides, BBQ chicken, root beer floats and beautiful weather- that is to say heavenly. A good time was had by all, but especially Rora...

Week of transition...

This week has been one of new experiences for the eldest kid. Rora started Kindergarten, riding the bus for the very first time (loves it, thank goodness), has a new sibling and there's all these new gadgets in the house (how do you explain a breast pump to a 5 year old, anyway?), etc. The other day I found that Rora was using my "leak guards" as rugs in her Barbie doll house (quite the avant-garde decorating sense, huh?). And this morning she asked if I loved the new baby more than her (cue heartbreak).

Anyway, it didn't take much to convince her that was not so, but it must be hard on the kid. She's had us on her own for 5.5 years now, so this is quite the change. Hopefully we'll be able to handle this without emotionally scarring both of them. Hah! What are the odds?!

I'm in for $50 on "Both kids will be in therapy before they are in training bras".

Duck 2007- Rora LOVES the Ocean

And here's a picture of Rora from her vacation with Kev's family in Duck, NC. Think she missed us? Hah!
Labour Day...
was August 29th for me, though to be honest, not much labour was involved at all. Went in at 8:30, they fitted me for an IV (was the most painful part of the process- apparently my veins look upon needles like Dracula looks at garlic knots, and they would shrink away and hide each time I got poked. Took them three nurses and 5 attempts. I look like a pin cushion.) and then took me in, gave me a spinal anaesthetic and got started. At 11:06 AM, we had a new baby girl, with a FULL head of VERY dark hair, who weighed 8 pounds, 5 ounces. They say that she was probably born about 2 weeks before term, and she would have easily been 9 pounds if we had waited that long. I am very glad we didn't.
She has my long fingers and toes, my eye shape and my olive complexion, but her dad's chipmunk cheeks. Pretty cute, in that newborn Winston Churchill way.
Anyway, it took us a while to decide on a name, and we ended up with one of the first that we had come up with- her name is Calliope Lilou Smith. Rora has long decided that she should be called Rose, essentially naming the new baby after herself (Princess Aurora in Sleeping Beauty is called Rose while living with Flora, Fauna and Merriwether), and while Kevin was more than willing to give the baby the middle name Rose, I'm not a fan myself, so I told her that if she wanted, she could call the baby Rose- no problem. I mean, we call Rora "Bug" and always have- so Rose is definitely an improvement on that. So, she has either been baby sister or Rosie since then. Good enough for me. Rora actually only met the baby last night, and has already proven to be more maternal than I am- she puts the baby's things away in more appropriate places, has fed her, wiped her face, brushed her hair, and sang her songs. I'm actually feeling pretty lucky, all in all.
Only snag right now is that apparently the baby and I have quite the incompatible blood types. I'm O+, she's A+, and therefore she is Coombs positive for jaundice. because of that, she is stuck on a bili blanket 24/7, and neither of us can go out in the nice weather. Hopefully she will be off it in a few days. As of right now, she looks like Kryptonite.
Oh, that and I'm bored. Bleah! Hey- maybe I'll update this more regularly with my free time! Or I'll remove the paneling from the living room! Or go stir crazy!
Guess which is most likely!
