Pitas? Really?

What Is Your Battle Cry?

Zang! Who is that, striding across the wasteland! It is Kelly, hands clutching two hardened pitas! She howls thunderously:

"I'm going to smack you in such an unsafe manner, you will drink poison and piss honey!"

And now for something completely different...

Freeganism.

So, I decided to subscribe to an e-mail newsletter about freeganism (check these out for basic info: freegan.info, veganporn and wikipedia's definition). I was IMMEDIATLEY turned off on the concept, which I had initially considered interesting, because the first e-mail I got was a treatise on why shoplifting is good.

Then I read this, which I thought was remarkably well-written (and interestingly enough, I got this link from that same freegan newsletter), but I disagree with her assertion that people not buying things cannot and will not hurt producers- if enough people do it, then producers will be hurt, their profits will go down. Now, would enough people ever do this? I doubt it. And as my friend Alala mentioned, do any of them have children? Puts a whole new dimension to the subject, doesn't it?

But I do agree about there being needier people out there, and maybe our focus should be more on shaming companies to not throw away perfectly good food, instead let's allow those who need it to be able to eat without digging through the trash. They deserve the right to that dignity (and much more- different issue though).

What do you guys think?

As I'm sure you can see...

from my new bio pic that I've been bored today and fooling around with Photoshop and I like playing with people's images, so I turned my kid into a pastel Warhol-style pic. Was pretty popular at the office, maybe I'll start selling them!

So, it comes to this...

The previous post has jump-started my husband's imagination (be afraid!), and so we're trying to come up with the title for the Stephen King novel to be (about the feral, evil cows). Here's what we have so far:

Bessie's Lot
Milky Shines
The Moo is Coming For You
Dawn of the Cows
Four Seasonings
Udder Terror
The Cream Mile
Bovines of the Night
The Shanksteak Redemption
Stephen King's Cow
Cowwie
The Night Mooer
Dolores Cowborne
The Lawnmoower Man
Cowjo

Can any of you come up with anything better? Okay, I know you can- do your worst!

And finally, some insight into the cow thing...

The first five commenters will be the participants. Ask me to interview you. I will respond by asking you each five questions. You will update your blog/site with the answers to those questions. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the same post. When others comment asking to be interviewed you will ask them five questions.

I asked ~d to interview me and these are her questions and my answers. If you would like ME to interview YOU be one of the
first five to leave me a comment asking me to do so, and I will post your questions in my next blog entry.

1. From your May 5th entry: you mention NPR stories that make you cry. What comes to mind?

There's a lot, actually. I don't consider myself a sentimental person, but NPR has my number. Almost all of the retrospectives they've done on people who have died in Iraq and Afganhistan, for example. I just can't help but feel the loss. But the best story they had that left me on my knees was about this couple that met late in life, Danny and Annie Perasa, and how much they love each other. Check it out here: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5230164

2. What is up with the cow-hating? Where did this come from?

This is a LONG story, but the gist of it is that cows (and I mean COWS, not bulls) don't like me. To the point that they have tried to attack me. I don't know if I give off some pheromone that makes them crazy- no clue, but I have witnesses. They hate me- they try to kill me. So, I decided to respond in kind, and this nice vegetarian girl became a steak-eating fiend.

Okay- I'll give an example. A friend of mine and I were crossing this pasture to get to the beach (this is in Scotland, pastures do indeed exist right next to beaches in Northern Scotland). Minding our own business, no big deal. I was 12 or 13. As we walked past this enormous herd of feral looking cows, one of the nasty beasties reared its ugly head up in this swift, querulous and yet angry gesture, and snorted at me. Then one by one, each of these supposedly peaceful creatures reared THEIR heads up as well. And then they started running. At me. Not slow- cows look like they might be slow, but they aren't. Maybe twenty of them. I don't know if I've ever run so fast again in my life, trying to get away from these animals. We escaped, but barely.

This. Is. Not. An. Isolated. Incident.

Cows are evil. I will be validated in the end, and Stephen King will write a particularly gory novel that will make Jaws seem tame. He will, I know it.

3. Name your desert island selections for five books, movies and albums. Compilations only count if they are SOLD that way.

Ooh- okay, this might take some time.

5 books:
Fool on the Hill by Matt Ruff
Lamb : The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart Presents America (The Book): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction
J.R.R. Tolkien Boxed Set (The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings) by Tolien
The Histories of Middle Earth, Volumes 1-5 by Tolkien (Will keep me busy!)

5 movies:
Harold and Maude
Jaws
The Shining (original- thank you very much)
Firefly (The Series)
The Fifth Element

5 albums:
Must I Paint You a Picture? The Essential Billy Bragg
The Heart of Saturday Night by Tom Waits
The White Album by The Beatles
Not a Pretty Girl by Ani DiFranco
Bring the Family by John Hiatt

4. What do you like the most about being a Mom?

Mostly just everything about my daughter. I'm not a "mom" person- I don't have a great maternal instinct, and I'm impatient and not thrilled by loud, repetitive noises- therefore not that good with small kids. But of course mine is different. I love how cuddly she is, I love her sweetness, and the look of mischief she gets on her face (her father's look, to be sure). I love how much of a daredevil she can be, and how she tries to take care of her dad and I. I like her soft skin and sweet smell. She's a good kid.

5. How did you and your husband meet?

We met at a pseudo-ren fest in Williamsburg, Virginia- where I was in a dunking booth taunting people ("Your mother wears a chastity belt, and your father threw away the key!"), and he was taking people's money so they could throw things at me. It was TERRIBLY romantic.

L is for Lists...

From Mario:

Post a comment, and I’ll give you a letter. You then write 10 things starting with that letter, explaining why. My letter is L.

1. Listening - I wish I was better at this. But sometimes even feigning interest is really, really hard.
2. Lightning - I love it.
3. Lynn - My middle name. Curse you Mom, curse you.
4. Losers - The New York Yankees. 'nuff said.
5. Lost - I used to like this show. Then the black smoke "spoke" to Mr. Echo, and my suspension of disbelief completely came apart. Oh well, BSG will be back at some point.
6. Luck - Although I don't always appreciate this- I have an abundance of it. I have a husband who I like to be around (more amzing than you might think- I'm not exactly a "people-person"), who's sexy and fun, a healthy, funny, beautiful and fairly well-behaved daughter, and no ailments to speak of. I'm very, very lucky.
7. Looney-Tunes - I am not!
8. Lettuce - Growing like gangbusters in my garden. Back rabbits! Back!
9. Linguine - My favorite pasta. Yummy. Okay farfalle is good too...
10. Lori - My Mom. She's a crazy lady, but I love her anyway. Happy Mother's Day.
