I Hate Cows...

And finally, some insight into the cow thing...

The first five commenters will be the participants. Ask me to interview you. I will respond by asking you each five questions. You will update your blog/site with the answers to those questions. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the same post. When others comment asking to be interviewed you will ask them five questions.

I asked ~d to interview me and these are her questions and my answers. If you would like ME to interview YOU be one of the
first five to leave me a comment asking me to do so, and I will post your questions in my next blog entry.

1. From your May 5th entry: you mention NPR stories that make you cry. What comes to mind?

There's a lot, actually. I don't consider myself a sentimental person, but NPR has my number. Almost all of the retrospectives they've done on people who have died in Iraq and Afganhistan, for example. I just can't help but feel the loss. But the best story they had that left me on my knees was about this couple that met late in life, Danny and Annie Perasa, and how much they love each other. Check it out here: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5230164

2. What is up with the cow-hating? Where did this come from?

This is a LONG story, but the gist of it is that cows (and I mean COWS, not bulls) don't like me. To the point that they have tried to attack me. I don't know if I give off some pheromone that makes them crazy- no clue, but I have witnesses. They hate me- they try to kill me. So, I decided to respond in kind, and this nice vegetarian girl became a steak-eating fiend.

Okay- I'll give an example. A friend of mine and I were crossing this pasture to get to the beach (this is in Scotland, pastures do indeed exist right next to beaches in Northern Scotland). Minding our own business, no big deal. I was 12 or 13. As we walked past this enormous herd of feral looking cows, one of the nasty beasties reared its ugly head up in this swift, querulous and yet angry gesture, and snorted at me. Then one by one, each of these supposedly peaceful creatures reared THEIR heads up as well. And then they started running. At me. Not slow- cows look like they might be slow, but they aren't. Maybe twenty of them. I don't know if I've ever run so fast again in my life, trying to get away from these animals. We escaped, but barely.

This. Is. Not. An. Isolated. Incident.

Cows are evil. I will be validated in the end, and Stephen King will write a particularly gory novel that will make Jaws seem tame. He will, I know it.

3. Name your desert island selections for five books, movies and albums. Compilations only count if they are SOLD that way.

Ooh- okay, this might take some time.

5 books:
Fool on the Hill by Matt Ruff
Lamb : The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart Presents America (The Book): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction
J.R.R. Tolkien Boxed Set (The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings) by Tolien
The Histories of Middle Earth, Volumes 1-5 by Tolkien (Will keep me busy!)

5 movies:
Harold and Maude
Jaws
The Shining (original- thank you very much)
Firefly (The Series)
The Fifth Element

5 albums:
Must I Paint You a Picture? The Essential Billy Bragg
The Heart of Saturday Night by Tom Waits
The White Album by The Beatles
Not a Pretty Girl by Ani DiFranco
Bring the Family by John Hiatt

4. What do you like the most about being a Mom?

Mostly just everything about my daughter. I'm not a "mom" person- I don't have a great maternal instinct, and I'm impatient and not thrilled by loud, repetitive noises- therefore not that good with small kids. But of course mine is different. I love how cuddly she is, I love her sweetness, and the look of mischief she gets on her face (her father's look, to be sure). I love how much of a daredevil she can be, and how she tries to take care of her dad and I. I like her soft skin and sweet smell. She's a good kid.

5. How did you and your husband meet?

We met at a pseudo-ren fest in Williamsburg, Virginia- where I was in a dunking booth taunting people ("Your mother wears a chastity belt, and your father threw away the key!"), and he was taking people's money so they could throw things at me. It was TERRIBLY romantic.

*scotland.
I hate typos.
I went to Dornoch in 2004. I remember the pastures being on the North Sea.

Oh- if you haven't read any Christopher Moore- you should, I've read all but one (The Stupidest Angel) and I'm in the middle of that as it is...

Biff is a GREAT story, explains easter bunnies and all that- a definite must read!

Oh- and thank you for the great questions!

this is a helluva lot more funner than I thought it would be !

NPR. I love it when I get a chance to listen to it. I fear playing it around my children b/c of the amt of violence they discuss.
Umm, the cows? Still an interesting concept, but I definalty have a better feel for it now.
( I would like to know where in Scotland, though. Just for kicks and shiggles. )
Harold and Maude-isnt that the one with the 2 ppl a kid and an old lady keep going to funerals...don't they end up-umm, intimate?
Jaws. Yeah, everytime that comes on regular TV the husband has to watch a few minutes of it. My favorite part is when they are on the boat getting drunk showing off their scars and singing Show me the Way to Go Home.
Tom Waits. I could SO just melt! Is this one the one that has Pasties and a G-String on it?
OK. cool. I hope you get some takers, like I said this was a lot more fun than I expected it to be !

I lived in Holy Loch as a very small kid- later on we came back and we lived in Thurso (AKA The Ass-End of Nowhere)- I loved it there. Very cool place. Not a lot to do, but beautiful.

And yeah, Harold and Maude is the Feb-Dec romance and Jaws is one of the greatest movies ever. I always watch it when I catch it- even when surfing, despite the fact I own it- too, too sad. That's not the Tom Waits with "Pasties" though, it has:

1. New Coat Of Paint (love this one)
2. San Diego Serenade
3. Semi Suite
4. Shiver Me Timbers (love this too)
5. Diamonds On My Windshield
6. The Heart Of Saturday Night
7. Fumblin' With The Blues
8. Please Call Me, Baby (my fav)
9. Depot, Depot
10. Drunk On The Moon
11. The Ghosts Of Saturday Night
